What are the commonly accepted loading patterns in data intensive iOS apps these days? -

so have app bunch of loading screens, remain under 5 seconds, compared apps instagram, yik yak, fb, twitter....it's worlds difference. don't see loading dialog beyond initial splash no matter in app go in of these apps. there commonly accepted pattern loading data app beyond initial screen user lands on on open?

are doing requests in background? doing 1 giant request thats considered acceptable if provide user splash screen?

usually loading of data may take longer done on background thread. gcd quite easy do.

yet have make app active in way, users may want start pressing buttons already. thus, caching data between starts , showing "old" data in beginning keep user happy.

splitting requests or doing 1 large requests depends lot on type of data , on backend well.

and "problem" exists not on ios, on desktop systems 1 have consider how load data. quite common problem.
